Space: by John Chang

Exhibited Works

MILL Contemporary is pleased to announce an exhibition of John Chang's new paintings titled, SPACE. This will be Chang's second solo show at the gallery. The exhibition will take place October 6th - November 27th, 2017, with an opening reception on Friday, October 6th, from 5-7 pm.

Chang's black and white paintings are about childhood memory, cultural identity, and distance. He speaks of  his decision to exclude color, "because black and white are not color; it's about life and death, day and night, negative and positive energy that we have to deal with in our everyday life".

Chang was born in Shanghai, and immigrated to Boston to study art in graduate school. He incorporates his culture by deconstructing Chinese characters, resulting in an abstracted language that transcends time/space/culture. The paintings resonate, even for those that may not be able to read Chinese, in their elegance and calligraphic gesture and design.

The Exhibition runs through November 27th.
