Catherine Eaton Skinner Statement
Sindura is the Sanskirt word for vermillion or scarlet red, which marks a sacred object or place. Earth red runs through my work, like a talismanic thread tied to the wrist for protection during a pilgrimage.
Red is the first color perceivable by the human eye. Early petroglyphs on stone were made with blood and hematite (red oxide), to signify the primal force of life. The process of liberating energy resides in the mercurial alchemy of fire; its purification provides the capacity for recreation and renewal.
Employing photography, encaustic wax and oil on panel, these new works explore the basic elements of earth and fire in their pure forms. These modern mandalas and archetypical forms invite new possibilities of perception.
